Magento custom development.

Custom work isn't about reinventing the wheel, but about adding value where it actually matters. What we build for you, and what really drives the cost.

What do we mean by custom work?

Every webshop is different. In many cases that calls for custom work. But it doesn't mean we ignore what already exists. We're obviously not going to reinvent or rewrite the shopping cart, just as we don't with all the other common parts of a webshop. That's why we use the e-commerce framework Magento / Adobe Commerce, which lets us put all the basic webshop functionality in place cost-efficiently.

And then the real work starts. Value-adding work. What makes your webshop different from your competitor's? Which features do you add to create a buying experience that stands out? What convinces a customer to order from you?

The answers to those questions vary widely, which is why custom work is usually needed to build exactly the thing that lifts you above the competition.

Think product configurators, order lists, specific ordering flows, personalisation, email automations, ERP integrations, PowerBI reports, and so on.

What does Magento custom development cost?

Honest answer: that depends on your scope. But the cost drivers can be named, and they are the same in just about every custom development project.

How many exceptions your process has. One price rule per customer group is cheap. Customer-specific volume tiers, different delivery dates per product group and exceptions to shipping methods are not. In practice, exceptions are the biggest cost item - not the functionality itself.

Whether an integration is involved. Custom work that only lives inside Magento is easy to estimate. As soon as your ERP, PIM or WMS joins in, the lead time also depends on what those systems can handle and on who builds it on that side.

How sharp the specification is. A Discover & Build phase costs money, but it prevents the most expensive kind of custom work: functionality you want to change after go-live anyway. The better you know up front which process you want to touch, the shorter the build.

Whether we can build on existing building blocks. For B2B functionality like order lists, company accounts and budgets we have the elgentos B2B Suite. Whatever is already in there, we don't build again - that's the difference between configuring and developing.

We always split the costs into two streams: feature development (capex) and maintenance (opex). New functionality is an investment with a beginning and an end. Keeping your platform running is a fixed monthly amount through Magento Total Care. By not letting those two run together, it stays visible where your money goes.

Want a worked-out calculation over three years, including maintenance, hosting and SLA? That's in our article What does a Magento platform really cost?.

We'll give you a ballpark figure for your own situation after a 30-minute intro call - enough to get scope and exceptions in view before you commit.
