This building materials retailer sells online to both consumers and the construction trade. The assortment ranges from sheet material and timber to complete building supplies: often bulky, heavy and sold per unit. That makes the logistics and the checkout experience the real challenge, not the catalogue.

We built a new, very fast storefront on Magento Open Source with Hyvä, focused on a smooth checkout and smart delivery and pickup logic.

Challenges & goals

Building materials are bulky and heavy, so delivery is complex and costly. Customers want to know before ordering whether, how and when delivery to their address is possible.

Many products are sold per unit: per m², per linear metre or per pack. The pricing display and the ordering process have to make that immediately clear.

Orders are often large and mixed, so speed and a smooth checkout are crucial. And the shop had to serve both consumers and business customers from a single environment.

Solution & implementation

We set up a fast, stable storefront on Magento Open Source with Hyvä, and solved the logistical complexity with custom work around pricing, delivery and pickup.

Fast Hyvä storefront

Hyvä delivers a lightweight front-end with short load times. That counts for extra with large, mixed orders in which customers compare many products side by side.

Pricing per unit

We built custom work that displays and calculates prices per unit: per m², per linear metre or per pack. This way the customer immediately sees what a product really costs, regardless of how it is sold.

Delivery by postcode, or pickup

Per postcode the shop determines whether and how quickly delivery is possible, with express delivery where available. Products that are pickup-only are clearly marked as such, with a targeted promotion to make pickup attractive. This prevents surprises at checkout and unnecessary returns.

Easy reordering

Repeat customers reorder a previous order in a few clicks, handy for those who regularly need the same materials.

Business customers

For business customers we validate the VAT number automatically, so that the correct pricing and invoicing apply.

Search, payments and growth

Smile ElasticSuite provides fast, relevant search results and filtering across a broad assortment. Payments run through Mollie. Product feeds go via Channable to Google and Facebook Shopping, email marketing via Klaviyo, and with Sentry we keep error monitoring sharp.

By combining a fast Hyvä storefront with custom work for per-unit pricing and delivery and pickup logic, the shop fits an assortment that is anything but standard logistically.
